Roughing it

I wanted to know if I could create a rough sketch of a photo, as if I were drawing at the position the photographer was standing. If I’m ever to draw people life, I should be able to draw rough sketches reasonably accurate.

To check what was wrong with my rough sketch, I put the original photo for educational purposes on top of the rough sketch.

I guess I have to improve my skill of putting things where to are supposed to be, relative to other things. In other words, I have to get better at estimating angles, volumes and negative spaces.

This is worthy of several rough sketches, which I will do today. Hopefully, by the end of the day, I will have learned a new skill, or, at least, improved a skill I already had.

West-Brabant Giants, man-to-man

This rough sketch is based on a photo I saw in a free local paper and scanned into my computer. It represents two basketball players, one attacking with the ball, and the other defending (a so-called man-to-man situation).

Again, a very tight composition, which needed many restatements, as you can see.

The composition of this sports scene isn’t easy. The players are in extraordinary positions and poses. It also shows I have not yet a solid technique for drawing the human figure.

I should keep trying, though, because it will only help me to improve my drawing skills.

West-Brabant Giants

My local basketball team is called West-Brabant Giants. I used to play basketball myself when I was young, so I know a bit about the game, and how players can get entangled when reaching for the ball.

This is just an exploratory sketch, to see what the problems are with drawing this scene, and how best to approach it. The sketch took about 45 minutes.

The photo was very tiny, only 304 by 468 pixels.

I will continue this drawing exercise tomorrow.
