Roughing it, part 4

18 Mar

This rough sketch is based on a photo of Jodie Meeks in one of his drives towards the basket. The photo is already imaginative, because of the tilt of the horizon. The drawing/sketch should make it even more so, because I can leave things out and just show what’s about.

This sketch doesn’t do that, but it has potential.

I also figured out what I was doing wrong with the previous rough sketches. I didn’t take enough time to draw. The rough was too rough, as I had expected. You still need to concentrate on your subject and not think about getting it done fast. It takes as much time as it should take.

That is all.

Roughing it, part 3

18 Mar

For some reason I’m not able to create a good sketch of this photo I found on the Internets.

Roughing it, part 3c

I don’t why that is, and I don’t seem able to find out.

On with the next photo, I guess. But first I should take a break, to lose some of that frustration that I have built up by not getting it right. There is something I’m not doing right, and I’m curious what that is. I guess it is some kind of idiosyncrasy, a bad habit I need to break.

That is all.

Roughing it, part 2

This is an attempt to improve my skills at drawing rough sketches. As an example I used a photo of college basketball I found through Google Image search.

Roughing it, part 2

The execution is better than in part 1, but not yet good enough for my intents and purposes. It needs to be more expressive, emotional. This is still showing too clearly that I’m having problems putting the parts in the correct location, and that I’m not yet engaged or enthused enough to make it “pop out” of the Flickr main photo stream.

That is all.

Roughing it

I wanted to know if I could create a rough sketch of a photo, as if I were drawing at the position the photographer was standing. If I’m ever to draw people life, I should be able to draw rough sketches reasonably accurate.

Roughing it

To check what was wrong with my rough sketch, I put the original photo for educational purposes on top of the rough sketch.

Rough sketch compared to photo

I guess I have to improve my skill of putting things where to are supposed to be, relative to other things. In other words, I have to get better at estimating angles, volumes and negative spaces.

This is worthy of several rough sketches, which I will do today. Hopefully, by the end of the day, I will have learned a new skill, or, at least, improved a skill I already had.

That is all.
