Warm-up sketch for April 11, 2010

11 Apr

This warm-up sketch wasn’t about shape (I took care the kitten in the sketch didn’t look like the kitten in the reference photo), but about texture. And since texture can take a really long time to put onto paper, I didn’t time this warm-up sketch. The challenge was to give an impression of an Abyssinian kitten, while the overall shape was off-model.

It’s fun to explore the relationship of kind of stroke, pencil pressure, blank page (negative space), and the overall impression of the drawing. I see I still have a lot to learn about that.

Pencilcast 04/10/2010 2:00PM

Because of technical difficulties, I streamed live on Livestream, instead of my usual Ustream channel. Nevertheless, I used a model sheet to draw Buzzy the Crow, a Noveltoon cartoon bird from the 1940s era. I found the model sheet on an Italian language website, Cartoonist globale.

Sketches drawn live on April 10, 2010

I think Buzzy the Crow was a fun character to draw, though not as easy as you might think. I used this frame from one of the videos on YouTube as a drawing example.
