Greeting card

25 Jan

I made this greeting card for my sister. She loves cats, and breeds Bengal cats as a hobby (quite successfully; she has had many show winners).

Greeting card

There was a lot of prep work for this drawing, a lot of sketching and preplanning. I also set myself a serious deadline, and had to make choices in order to make the deadline. It was stressful, but I’m glad I did it.

The card was drawn on a big sheet of paper in Pentel red line pencil, and I inked the letters using a Faber-Castell PITT artists brush pen. I didn’t have time to ink the rest analog, so I decided to do the contour lines in Sketchbook Pro on the Mac. I haven’t done any work with that app, so it was good to experience what it felt like to use.

I did the digital drawing on the morning of my sister’s birthday, so there was no time to do any coloring.

Even for self-assignments there are three things to choose from: quality, time and price. You can only pick two. Here that was time and price. Quality had to suffer a bit.

Good to know for a next time.

Dutch guy

Ah, throw in a tulip, wooden shoes, and a windmill, and you have a drawing of a stereotypical Dutch guy.

And let’s not forget the cheese!

That is all.

Yay, I received my copy of Rebootus Maximus. To celebrate I drew this piece of fan art. Read more about it in this blog post.

Running Ronald is famous among Dutch blogging runners. He is a likable guy with a passion for running.

You can read his blog at www.runningronald.nl.

This sketch started as a red colored pencil sketch, which I refined with black lead. The scanned result looks like this.

RunningRonald.NL (rough sketch)

As you might have guessed if you’ve read my previous posts, I removed the red color with decompose into CMYK and only using the K channel. The clean up/retouch was mostly done with the stencil tool in GIMP. After I changed the levels on the image, so the light gray pencil lines became darker, I added the text, and put an outline around it.

It was a fun project, based on one of the many photos featuring Running Ronald in his Flickr feed.

That is all.

Carolina Dijkhuizen

11 Mar

Dutch actress Carolina Dijkhuizen was mentioned in my local ad paper, playing in the theater play “The Soul of Motown II”.

I particularly liked her pose, like that of a performer of Soul music. I guess because she is playing a Motown singer that is a good thing.

The drawing was made in 2 hours, using HB pencil on A4 (210 x 297 mm) 120 g/m2 drawing paper. After scanning, I adjusted the levels slightly, to give it a bit more contrast.

That is all.
