The Birds

20 Jan

Like yesterday, this drawing on Digital Doodle was based on a poster of the movie “The Birds”, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The crow was very hard to draw, because the tools are so crude.

The Birds

For this drawing I used Overlay Demo for the Mac to draw the outline (by comparing my drawing with the JPEG of the original poster). However, at some point this tool did more harm than good. I guess that should give you a clue that it is time to let go of your crutches and start to draw for real, instead of “faking it” all the way with helper tools. Overlay is good to set up the initial sketch, but once you start to tighten the drawing and fill in the details, you need to rely on your artistic skills again, your interpretation of reality.

Crow

19 Jan

The theme of Digital Doodle is still “birds”, so I googled for a poster of the movie “The Birds”, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. On this poster, I thought one of the crows should be really interesting to draw.

I’m still struggling with the controls of this online drawing program. It does not always do what I want it to do, especially when I’m finishing the drawing. I guess all the strokes are remembered, so the interface gets a bit sluggish when you have drawn many of them. I don’t know if this is so, or that I’m just imagining things.

The other type of bird

17 Jan

On Digital Doodle (which I discovered yesterday) this week’s theme is “bird”. Now most people will think of the animal with feathers and wings, but there is also the slang meaning of bird. I called this type of bird, the other type of bird.

There are some problems with the user interface, as you probably can see in the sketch. Sometimes it is hard to select the color of the pencil (it will not “stick”), and other times, the pencil draws while you hover over your drawing without pressing the mouse button.

Ah well, you can’t have everything. I just have to work around those limitations.
